What does a Chemical Peel Entail?

Peels are performed at an AAAASF-accredited outpatient facility with the option for light sedation. In general, chemical peels act as their own natural anesthesia, so numbing usually isn’t required. The treatment falls into three separate categories of mild, medium and deep levels of intensity.

Mild

Mild chemical peels employ alphahydroxy acids (AHAs) – acids from fruits and plants – to lighten and smooth the skin with little downtime or discomfort. AHAs work to trigger the growth of new collagen, remove dead skin cells, and minimize oiliness. Mild chemical peels are often ideal for treating acne scars and craters, and for improving mottled skin pigmentation. The treatments can be repeated often, and are usually brief enough to be performed during your lunch break. Most mild chemical peels are performed by our aestheticians and skin care specialists in a quiet, comfortable, and relaxing setting.

Medium

The main ingredient in medium strength chemical peels is trichloroacetic acid (TCA), a potent agent that helps treat blemishes, wrinkles and sun damage. TCA peels are often recommended for patients with darker skin. Patients may undergo multiple sessions that are scheduled at 2-3 month intervals. As expected, the recovery time for a medium strength peel is somewhere between that of the AHA peels and phenol peels.

Deep

The most intense chemical peels use phenol, a concentrated compound naturally found in plants. Deep peels are appropriate for fairer-skinned patients with major to severe skin problems, including sun blotches, pre-cancerous growths and entrenched creases, lines and folds. Phenol peels are only used on the face and are not suitable for other parts of the body. The procedure itself takes a bit longer than the others, usually around 1 hour, and recovery time is slower as well, progressing over the course of months rather than weeks or days.

Choosing the Best Cosmetic Skincare Professionals

Chemical peel patients should be aware that treatments administered by untrained or non-credentialed practitioners can cause serious, and even irreversible, damage to the skin. Only a trained, board certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist is qualified to successfully and safely calibrate a chemical treatment. At PPSD, we have assembled one of the largest and most experienced integrated skincare teams to offer you a dynamic range of advanced, transformative solutions, personalized to your unique cosmetic needs.

The first step in your journey towards beautiful, blemish-free skin is to set up a consultation at one of our comfortable office suites in Charlotte, Gastonia, Shelby, Hickory, Lake Norman and surrounding cities.

Your doctor will examine your skin, inquire about your aesthetic goals, and review your medical records including any allergies or special conditions. He or she will then create a treatment plan tailored to your skin type, texture, tone and pigmentation, presenting you with clear expectations for your results.

After Your Peel

AHA peels tend to be gentle enough that they do not require any recovery; however a deep phenol peel will call for the skin to be coated with healing ointment and protective dressing post-treatment. To aid in your comfort, your doctor may also prescribe pain relievers after a deep or medium chemical peel. You may experience some swelling with the more intense treatments, as well as scabbing or crusting, but these symptoms are typically short-lived and only last a few days. Patients should temporarily avoid overuse of the facial muscles and excessive chewing in order to let the skin heal. Within around 10 days, you should see a gorgeous new layer of pristine, pock-free skin begin to emerge. Remember to protect your new skin by wearing sunblock every day.
