How Does Coolsculpting Work?

Coolsculpting relies on a fascinating process called cryolipolysis wherein stubborn, undesirable pockets of fat are gathered up between two computer-monitored panels and frozen to death. The beauty of cryolipolysis is that healthy surrounding cells remain intact, while the targeted fat cells are absorbed into the body to be eliminated as bio waste.

After coating your skin with a soothing gel, the doctor will apply the cryolipolysis panels. The Coolsculpting procedure is carefully monitored through computerized safety sensors to ensure that results are evenly distributed and that you remain comfortable at all times. Most patients will feel a slight stinging sensation, comparable to a sunburn.

This is no cause for alarm, and merely implies the procedure is working as intended.

Patients may relax, watch movies, read, or work on the computer while undergoing Coolsculpting. Some even elect to take a much-needed and much-deserved nap!

After the Procedure

While patients may encounter redness, tenderness or soreness at the treatment sites, this is typically mild and will disappear within a week. There is no downtime with Coolsculpting, so you may return to work and regular activities the same day.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect?

Following your first body contouring treatment, you will see a marked reduction of unsightly bulges and fat deposits, with results more apparent at around three weeks post-procedure. At 2-4 months, you will experience the most dramatic improvement, and these changes will remain permanent as long as you continue to adhere to a healthy diet and exercise regimen. If you are eager to enhance your outstanding results, Coolsculpting treatment can be repeated at your doctor’s discretion.

Who is a good candidate for CoolSculpting?

Unlike bariatric surgery, CoolSculpting is not a weight-loss procedure. It is specifically designed for women and men with unwanted fatty deposits. A good candidate for CoolSculpting would be a patient who wants to get rid of fat bulges (for example, in the belly, hips, or thighs) without undergoing liposuction or a more invasive procedure.

What areas of the body can be treated with CoolSculpting?

Fat deposits tend to show up in different areas in women than in men. CoolSculpting is an effective body-contouring treatment for both genders. It can be used to slim and shape:

  • Abdomen
  • Flanks (“muffin top” or “love handles”)
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Upper Arms
  • Under the chin

What makes CoolSculpting results long-lasting?

State-of-the-art CoolSculpting technology destroys unwanted fat cells without damaging surrounding tissue and skin. When fat cells are destroyed, they do not renew themselves. Once they are gone, they are gone for good and no longer able to accumulate and store fat.

It comes down to the difference between weight loss and fat reduction. Fat cells can shrink or expand, but they cannot replicate.

When you lose weight, your fat cells shrink but still have the potential to expand if you regain the weight you lost. With CoolSculpting fat reduction, on the other hand, fat cells are destroyed and removed through the natural processes of the body. The fat cells will not return, and your body does not produce new fat cells to replace them.

What can CoolSculpting do for a double chin?

CoolSculpting is an effective treatment to improve the contours of the neckline and remove visible fat bulges under the chin. As with other areas of the body, treatment for a double chin with CoolSculpting is easily tolerable for most people. Many of our patients see noticeable results after only one to two treatments, with no injections or surgery and little or no downtime.

How long does a CoolSculpting treatment take and how many treatments will I need?

The length of a CoolSculpting treatment session varies from patient to patient, depending on the number of areas being treated in a single appointment. A single treatment can last 35 to 60 minutes or more, and some patients choose to have more than one treatment in an office visit.

The number of treatments needed for ideal body contouring will depend on your unique anatomy and individual treatment goals. At Piedmont Plastic Surgery & Dermatology, we will custom-tailor a CoolSculpting treatment plan specifically for you.
