The process includes a patented cooling system, developed to prepare the skin for treatment. It sprays the upper layer of the skin with a burst of cooling cryogen (a substance that produces very low temperatures). This cooling factor makes the treatment more comfortable for the patient. At Piedmont Plastic Surgery & Dermatology, we hold patient comfort and safety as a priority.

Laser Hair Removal With GentleYAG Laser

Many people, both women and men, have unwanted hair. The GentleYAG Laser system delivers laser energy through a small device held by the practitioner. It functions by delivering a narrow, intense beam of light that is then absorbed by the skin and converted to heat which is absorbed by the cells in the specific targeted area of the face or body. The process involves focusing the laser upon a very limited area, and this direct beam does not affect the surrounding tissue – the perfect method for those who are interested in hair removal.

The GentleYAG Laser can be used to resolve unwanted hair in the following areas of the body:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Bikini zone
  • Underarms
  • Arms
  • Legs

All skin types can be successfully treated with the GentleYAG system, and patients of any age can be can have unwanted hair removed. Only hair with pigment will be removed with this process, as it targets the pigment in the hair, so people with brown or black hair are candidates for the treatment. Whether your issue is related to facial whisker bumps, back hair, upper lip hair, or other area of your body, if the hair is dark in color, we advise you get a consultation about the GentleYAG Laser treatment.

Are You a Candidate for GentleYAG?

As this laser system specifically targets pigment, we ensure that a test upon three or four areas is performed first. This will allow us to make sure that your natural skin color won’t be impacted by the treatment. We can meet with you and evaluate your skin condition, the areas in which you want the hair removed, and discuss the process with you in an initial consultation. If you are not a candidate for GentleYAG, we have other treatments that could resolve your unwanted hair.

Is the GentleYAG Laser Treatment Painful?

The laser treatment feels like a hot pinch, or similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. To prepare for the treatment, a specific anesthetic cream is applied to the area 30 minutes prior to the GentleYAG treatment, and with the addition of the cooling feature, most patients experience very little discomfort. Depending upon the amount of unwanted hair to be removed, the treatment may take about fifteen minutes, or could require an hour or longer.

The GentleYag Laser: Recovering From Hair Removal

Thankfully, recovery from this treatment is fast. Initially, the skin will appear red, and there is typically some swelling. The sensation is very similar to a sunburn. That sensation tends to last an hour or two, or as long as a day. The hair in that area will shed off, and a mild crusting could occur. Most patients are able to return to all normal activities the same day as the treatment. Of course, contact your doctor if you have any abnormal level of reaction so it can be addressed immediately. It will be necessary to use 30 SPF sunscreen and keep the treated area out of the sun by wearing protective clothing.

Your comfort can be increased with cool compresses applied to the area. This will help reduce redness, swelling, and any discomfort you may experience. As the days pass, more of the unwanted hair will shed, and those that do grow back will be finer. GentleYAG Laser hair removal usually requires between two and six treatments to achieve optimal effectiveness. Depending upon your individual situation, total hair removal may or may not be achieved, but a significant reduction in unwanted hair is usually the result. Some may require a minor touch-up later when new hairs show up.

The GentleYAG Laser system is also effective for other conditions, including spider veins, acne scars, age spots, and as a non-surgical method to tighten lax, loose skin. The fact that this laser treatment is faster and less painful makes it a favorite for many of the patients we treat in our out-patient clinics.
